An Imperial Filigree Byzantine Gold Opus Pendant with Pearl, Garnets and other beads.
One-of-a-Kind, exceptionally rare pendant dating from 6th-7th century A.D. and later.
The pendant measures 7.3 cm, and weighs 4.92 grams.
The Byzantine Empire (330–1453 AD) produced some of the most opulent, dramatic, and technically advanced jewelry in human history. It was a bridge between the classical Roman world and the rich mysticism of the Middle East, resulting in a style that was intensely vibrant, highly religious, and deeply symbolic. Byzantine goldsmiths were absolute masters of texture, using techniques that modern designers still try to replicate today:
- Opus Interrasile (Openwork): This was a technique where goldsmiths painstakingly pierced sheets of gold to create a delicate, lace-like pattern. It made heavy jewellery look weightless and allowed light to pass through.
- Granulation and Filigree: They soldered microscopic gold beads (granulation) and twisted gold threads (filigree) onto surfaces to create rich, raised textures that begged to be touched.
