Keshi pearls are unique, organic pearls that form entirely of solid nacre without a bead nucleus. The term comes from the Japanese word for "poppy seed", historically used to describe the tiny, accidental "seed" pearls that cropped up as a byproduct of saltwater pearl cultivation.

Unlike standard cultured pearls grown around a man-made bead or tissue seed, keshi pearls typically form when an oyster rejects an implanted nucleus or mantle tissue shifts, yet the mollusk continues secreting nacre. 

Because they are composed 100% of solid nacre with no core, they often possess a sharper, deeper, almost metallic iridescence with exceptional luster, compared to bead-nucleated pearls.

They are almost exclusively baroque (asymmetrical, flat, petal-like, or twisted) because no rigid sphere guides their growth.
